Ingredients for Easy Strawberry Buttercream Frosting Recipe

Freeze-Dried Strawberries

You’ll want 1 cup (that’s about 25g) of these little guys. We’re gonna grind ’em into a fine powder, so they mix in like a dream. Trust me, don’t skip this step!

Unsalted Butter

Gotta have 1 cup (or 16 Tbsp, or 226g – I got you covered!), and it *needs* to be softened. Like, *really* soft. Room temp is key here, okay?

Confectioners’ Sugar

Grab 3 and 1/2 cups (that’s 420g) of this stuff. Sifting is your friend here! Nobody wants lumpy frosting, right?

Heavy Cream or Whole Milk

You’ll need 1/4 cup (which is 60ml). Room temperature again! See a pattern here?

Pure Vanilla Extract

Just a teaspoon of the good stuff! It really makes the strawberry flavor POP.

Salt

A pinch! Just a tiny bit to balance all that sweetness. Trust your taste buds on this one.

How to Make Easy Strawberry Buttercream Frosting Recipe

Step 1: Prepare the Strawberries

Okay, first things first, grab those freeze-dried strawberries! Toss ’em into your food processor or blender and whiz them until they’re a super fine powder. You’re aiming for about 1/2 cup, okay? Now, this is important: you want the powder to be *really* fine. If it’s still a bit chunky, sift it! Trust me, nobody wants little strawberry bits in their smooth, dreamy frosting.

Step 2: Cream the Butter

Next up, the butter! Make sure it’s nice and soft – if it’s still cold, you’re gonna have a bad time. Throw it in a big bowl and beat it with your mixer (handheld or stand mixer, whatever you’ve got!) until it’s creamy and smooth. This usually takes a couple of minutes. You want it light and fluffy, almost like whipped cream!

Step 3: Combine Ingredients

Alright, time to get everything together! Slowly add in that confectioners’ sugar, the strawberry powder (that smells amazing, right?!), the heavy cream (or milk), and the vanilla extract to the butter. Now, this is key: start on *low* speed! Otherwise, you’ll have a sugar cloud all over your kitchen. Oops, been there, done that! Mix it on low for about 30 seconds, just until everything starts to come together.

Step 4: Whip to Perfection

Now for the fun part! Crank that mixer up to high speed and whip it good! You want to beat it until it’s light, fluffy, and seriously dreamy. This usually takes about 2 minutes. If it looks too thick, add a tiny bit more cream or milk – a tablespoon at a time! And don’t forget that pinch of salt – it really balances out the sweetness. You’ll know it’s ready when it’s smooth, holds its shape, and you just want to dive right in! (Don’t worry, we’re almost there!)

Step 5: Taste and Adjust

Okay, the *most* important step: taste it! Does it need more strawberry flavor? Add a little more strawberry powder. Too sweet? Add a pinch more salt. Not sweet enough? Add a bit more confectioners’ sugar. You’re the boss here! Get it just how you like it. And then, go ahead, dive in! I won’t tell!

Tips for the Best Easy Strawberry Buttercream Frosting Recipe

Use Room Temperature Ingredients

Seriously, this is *so* important! If your butter is too cold, you’ll end up with lumpy frosting. And nobody wants that! Room temperature butter and milk blend together like a dream, creating that super smooth texture we’re after. For more tips on baking ingredients, check out this guide to baking ingredients.

Don’t Overmix

Okay, listen up! Overmixing is a buttercream killer! It can make your frosting tough and dense. Yuck! Mix it just until everything is combined and fluffy. Trust me, less is more here!

Sift the Confectioners’ Sugar

I know, I know, it’s an extra step. But trust me on this one! Sifting gets rid of any lumps in the sugar, which means you’ll end up with a perfectly smooth, lump-free frosting. And that’s what we’re all about, right?

Adjust the Consistency

Frosting too thick? Add a tiny splash of milk or cream. Too thin? Add a bit more confectioners’ sugar. It’s all about finding that perfect balance! You want it to be spreadable but still hold its shape. Play around with it until it’s just right!

Variations on This Easy Strawberry Buttercream Frosting Recipe

Add a Touch of Lemon

Ooh, this is one of my faves! A little bit of lemon zest (or even a tiny squeeze of lemon juice!) adds such a bright, tangy twist to the strawberry. It’s like a strawberry lemonade party in your mouth! Seriously, give it a try!

Chocolate Strawberry Buttercream

Chocolate and strawberry? Yes, please! Just add a couple of tablespoons of cocoa powder to the recipe and BOOM! You’ve got a rich, decadent chocolate strawberry frosting. My kids go crazy for this one!

Use Fresh Strawberries

Okay, so you *can* use fresh strawberries, but it’s a bit tricky. They add a lot of extra liquid, so you’ll need to reduce the amount of milk or cream. And honestly, the flavor isn’t as intense. But if you’re feeling adventurous, go for it! Just be prepared to experiment a little.

Vegan Strawberry Buttercream

Yup, you can totally make this vegan! Just swap out the butter for your favorite vegan butter alternative and use plant-based milk instead of dairy. Easy peasy! Just make sure your vegan butter is nice and soft, just like regular butter!

Storing Your Easy Strawberry Buttercream Frosting Recipe

Refrigerating Instructions

Got leftovers? No problem! Just pop that gorgeous frosting into an airtight container and stash it in the fridge. It’ll keep for up to a week. Easy peasy!

Freezing Instructions

Wanna save some for later? You can totally freeze this frosting! Just make sure it’s in an airtight container, and it’ll be good for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to use it, thaw it overnight in the fridge and then give it a good beating with your mixer to get it creamy again. Sometimes it needs a tiny splash of milk to get back to the right consistency. You got this!

Easy Strawberry Buttercream Frosting Recipe FAQs

Can I use fresh strawberries instead of freeze-dried?

Okay, so you *can*, but lemme tell ya, freeze-dried strawberries are where it’s at for this recipe! Fresh ones have a lot more water, which means you’ll have to mess with the liquid ratio. Plus, the freeze-dried ones give you a *way* more intense strawberry flavor. Trust me on this one!

My frosting is too thick. How can I fix it?

Easy peasy! Just add a tablespoon of milk (or cream!) at a time and mix it until it’s the right consistency. Don’t add too much at once, or you’ll end up with soup! We’re going for dreamy, not drippy, ya know?

My frosting is too sweet. What can I do?

Aha! A pinch of salt is your best friend here. Seriously, a tiny pinch can work wonders! If it’s *really* sweet, you could even add a tiny squeeze of lemon juice. That’ll balance things out perfectly!

Can I make this frosting ahead of time?

Totally! This frosting is a make-ahead dream. Just pop it in the fridge or freezer (see the storage instructions above!) and you’re good to go. Just remember to give it a good beating before you use it, so it’s nice and creamy again!

Description

Easy strawberry buttercream frosting recipe.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (about 25g) freeze-dried strawberries
  • 1 cup (16 Tbsp; 226g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 3 and 1/2 cups (420g) confectioners’ sugar
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) heavy cream or whole milk, at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • salt, to taste

Instructions

  1. Using a food processor or blender, process the freeze-dried strawberries into a powdery crumb. You should have around 1/2 cup. If it’s not grinding down fine enough, you can sift it with a fine mesh sieve to rid larger seeds/pieces. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl using a handheld or stand mixer fitted with a paddle or whisk attachment, beat the butter on medium-high speed until creamy, about 2 minutes. Add confectioners’ sugar, strawberry powder, heavy cream/milk, and vanilla. Beat on low speed for 30 seconds, then switch to high speed and beat for 2 minutes. Taste. Add 1–2 more Tablespoons of heavy cream/milk if needed to thin out, if desired. (I usually add at least 1 more.) Add a pinch of salt if frosting is too sweet.
  3. Use immediately or cover tightly and store for up to 1 week in the refrigerator or up to 3 months in the freezer. After freezing, thaw in the refrigerator then beat the frosting on medium speed for a few seconds so it’s creamy again. After thawing or refrigerating, beating in a splash of heavy cream or milk will help thin the frosting out again, if needed. (It stiffens in the refrigerator.)

Notes

  • Store for up to 1 week in the refrigerator.
  • Store for up to 3 months in the freezer.
  • Beat after thawing or refrigerating to restore creamy texture.
