Description

A traditional Dutch apple pie featuring cinnamon-spiced apples and a buttery crumb topping.


Ingredients

  • 68 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 box (14.1 ounces) refrigerated pie crusts
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine apple slices, granulated sugar, 1/4 cup flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  3. Line a 9-inch pie plate with one pie crust.
  4. Pour apple mixture into the crust.
  5. In a separate bowl, combine 1 cup flour and brown sugar. Cut in cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  6. Sprinkle crumb topping evenly over the apple filling.
  7. Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  8. Let cool completely before serving.

Notes

  • Use a variety of apples for a more complex flavor.
  • Add a tablespoon of lemon juice to the apples to prevent browning.
  • Cover the edges of the crust with foil during the last 15 minutes of baking to prevent burning.
