Description

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar, for coating

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, cream together shortening and 1 cup sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in molasses and egg.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves.
  4. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Roll each ball in 1/4 cup sugar.
  6. Place cookies on ungreased baking sheets.
  7. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until edges are set.
  8. Let cool on baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For extra soft cookies, don’t overbake.
  • Store in an airtight container to maintain softness.
